Our Core Values are an expression of both who we are and indeed, what we are. They are the Professional Principles and Behaviours which define our organisation and how we interact with our Clients, our Stakeholders and each other. Our Core Values have been engrained in our business through decades of careful delivery of engineering and environmental services. Each of our Core Values is placed on an equal footing within our organisation and is championed by a senior person in the organisation who takes primary responsibility for setting measureable goals, which are designed to show continuous improvement.
Health & Safety
Health and Safety is a fundamental Core Value for TOBIN Consulting Engineers and forms an integral part of the culture of our company. We instil it in all our staff, at all levels of the organisation, and it is to the fore of all of our activities every day.
Health and Safety is firstly central to the wellbeing of our own people. Great service can only emerge from great workplaces, which are modern, open plan, well ventilated, climate controlled, with dedicated lighting, ergonomically designed workstations and with contemporary welfare facilitates. We believe that the management and balancing of the workload of our professionals leads to greater creativity and fulfilment in our working lives. We also actively plan for the safety of visitors to our offices, by induction and inclusion in our safety plan.
We recognise our opportunity, and our responsibility, to leverage our safety culture, to impact positively on the health and safety of persons in our projects.
TOBIN treats this as a primary objective, reaching down the chain to the safety of all people who come into contact with our projects. Not only do we meticulously embed safe operation in our designs but we also consider safe constructability, ongoing maintenance and future works, whether replacement, extension or demolition, as fundamental requirements. The TOBIN Consulting Engineers Safety Management System, covering all these categories of people, is a primary component of our Business Management System, and it is accredited by NSAI, to meet the requirements of OHSAS 18001.
The safety of our people, our clients and the end-users and operators of facilities, which we have designed or project managed, is always to the fore. The TOBIN Consulting Engineers Quality Management System includes a Designer’s Safety Role Procedure (RM07) and PSDP Role Procedure (RM06). The Designer’s Safety Role Procedure defines TOBIN’s safety role as designer under the Construction Regulations. The PSDP Role Procedure describes the management, monitoring and control procedures in place for all design stages of a project, including any design during construction. These procedures have their foundations in over 60 years of design and construction / project management experience, experience brought to bear for the benefit of TOBIN and our clients alike.
Origins of our Values
Like many success stories in the contemporary business-world, the initial start-up stages tend to have taken place in far more humble settings. This is, without doubt, the case for TOBIN Consulting Engineers. Patrick Tobin, the company’s founder, established the entity as we know it today back in 1952. Patrick carried with him, all the unmistakeable traits of a true entrepreneur. Starting out as ‘one man’ operation, Patrick had a specific vision and set of standards that he was passionate about embedding in a high quality engineering consultancy practice. At the core of this man’s vision was a commitment to excellence and a commitment to innovation within the engineering arena as we know it. To make this vision a reality, Patrick set his focus on building a team around him that were committed to this same vision and who also shared his specific values. Almost seven decades later, we still operate under these same guidelines and proudly maintain a strong family ethos in all of our operations across various business areas.
Patrick’s vision is firmly imprinted on the TOBIN operation today through formal recognition in our core values. These values include: Innovation, Sustainability, Commerciality, Health & Safety and People & Relationships. TOBIN’s complete operational output and corporate social responsibility is guided by these five core values. These strong traditions, so apparent from day one, are still laid bare to this day for all employees to absorb, and these are the mainstay of the TOBIN family atmosphere which has become synonymous with the company both in Ireland and the UK.
Being Irish owned and operated has meant that our company looks at more than just the job or project at hand for both their employees and their clients. There is a real and vested personal interest taken in all aspects of our daily work to make sure that our reputation, acquired over six successful decades, remains intact and in high regard throughout the industry for many more years to come.
At TOBIN Consulting Engineers, we love the creativity that delivers a clever design or a new way of meeting a challenge. We have succeeded in building an environment where innovation is an integral part of the way we do business. This essentially means that anyone, at any level, within TOBIN is allowed the time and space to be creative, to initiate any innovation and to test their ideas. We believe the constant search to develop new ways of providing an improved, high quality service is the pulse of a vibrant international company.
At its simplest, innovation has been described as the act of creating something new. A slightly more complex definition describes innovation as the exploitation of new ideas to gain a competitive advantage.
In TOBIN we apply innovation both to our operational projects, through design solutions or project management techniques, and to the operation of the company as a whole, through continuous improvement of our business management processes and procedures, in expanding our services and operational areas and introducing new organisational structures or work practices.
Creativity and innovation are essential components of the design process. TOBIN has a culture of encouraging new ideas and fresh thinking in project design and delivery and in the way in which we run our business. We recognise that there is a close link between innovation and sustainability, two of the company’s core values, and therefore the two are inextricably linked in the TOBIN design process. Sustainable and innovative design solutions can lead to savings in capital costs, through imaginative use or re-use of materials, or lead to lower energy and therefore lower operational costs for any facility.
We use an Innovation Process to help us identify and explore new and creative ways to conduct our business, from novel applications of existing expertise or knowledge, to new synergies with our partners, or inventive ways to meet project or business management challenges. In this way we are always willing to question and review our internal business processes and our designs and services in ever more creative ways.
We try to capture all sources of innovation and ideas, from listening to our own staff and clients, to consulting with suppliers and researching publications and literature. The process allows any member of staff across the organisation to contribute an idea, and lightbulb moments are brought forward for evaluation and development. However, we also appreciate that innovation can be realised not only through the application or development of new solutions or techniques but also by integrating existing know-how to produce innovative design solutions or approaches to specific problems.
TOBIN Consulting Engineers strive at every opportunity to add value to our client's projects.
We prioritise re-investment to develop both our staff and our service offering, all the while balancing our Clients’ need for value for money with our need to sustain vibrancy in the company that delivers that value. We hold ourselves accountable to all of our Stakeholders for the financial management of our individual project assignments, and for our business as a whole. We strive at every opportunity to add value to our projects, on behalf of our clients, to ensure successful project outcomes.
We devote considerable attention to planning and measuring our performance, at project level and company wide. We constantly seek to improve our Business Management Systems, always aiming to move towards ‘best practice’. We encourage all of our stakeholders (Clients, Staff, Sub Consultants) to understand and challenge our Business Model, and to share with us, their ideas and methodologies. We believe in shared learning, and we value its contribution to commercial success and longevity.
At TOBIN Consulting Engineers, we recognise that our business, in our activities and provision of services, has an important role in developing and protecting our environment and in securing its long-term sustainability for future generations.
The three pillars of sustainability (environmental, economic and social) are addressed through our Environmental Management System (EMS) in compliance with ISO 14001:2004, as part of an overall integrated Business Management System.
Our environmental policy incorporates a sustainability framework based on the 10 One Planet Living® principles in so far as they are applicable to our various activities and services. The principles are as follows:
- Zero Carbon
- Zero Waste
- Sustainable Transport
- Local and Sustainable Material
- Local and Sustainable Food
- Sustainable Water
- Natural Habitats and Wildlife
- Culture and Heritage
- Equality and Fair Trade
- Health and Happiness
“One Planet” principles will be fundamental to all economic activity and are reshaping the delivery of engineering services.
These principles commit us to:
- Reducing Carbon Footprint
- Managing Resource Usage
- Protecting Biodiversity
- Improving Quality of Life
It is our policy to maximise the beneficial effects of our activities on our environment, to promote sustainable solutions and to minimise any harmful effects in the communities and locations in which we deliver our engineering services. We work with everyone to foster this value and we show leadership by promoting best environmental practices. Our design systems include custom templates to apply the ten principles on our projects and we draw on our innovation skills to deliver sustainability in our activities and services.
While the world is awakening to sustainability principles which will help to mitigate the effects of climate change, the dividend will not come quickly enough to prevent a rise in global temperatures. In our engineering designs and other activities we are taking account of the effects of climate change while at the same time implementing the sustainability policies and business practices that seek to combat the causes of climate change, especially in the areas of
- Water resources management
- Low flow stresses in receiving waters and consequent impacts on water quality and ecology
- Flood Protection Measures
People & Relationship
In TOBIN Consulting Engineers, people and relationships is at the heart of everything we do. We trade on our professionalism, knowledge, experience and ability to communicate. We firmly hold to the idea that it is the whole person who comes to work each day. It follows then that the quality of working life provided to and by our staff is very important to us, because good work productivity can only come from a creative and enjoyable working atmosphere. We try hard to make our workplace a safe and fulfilling place to be and from which to return home in the evening.
We invest in developing the skills of our people, so that they grow in their careers. We also encourage internal transmission of working experience through activities such as our lunchtime lecture programme.
We were among the first Consulting Engineers to be certified under the Engineers Ireland CPD programme, and we are a National Award Winner in the medium size company category. In partnership with our Clients, we pursue a standard of excellence in our projects, always in furtherance of a relationship, which will bring repeat business and strong endorsements. We always strive to extend this relationship well beyond technical and environmental support, into the role of trusted adviser to our clients.
We prioritise the safety of people in our own workplace, and in our engineering designs and project management, with a dedicated Safety Manager at Director level. The mettle of a company is often tested by how they respond to problems or third party challenges and, when these occur, we bring patience, perseverance and committed support to our Client.
