As part of Engineers Week 2017 (running from the 4th – 10th March), TOBIN Consulting Engineers held an ‘Open Day’ for engineering enthusiasts at the National Sports Campus in Abbotstown, Co. Dublin. We were delighted to welcome students from Luttrellstown Community College and members of the general public alike to the Campus to see the role that Engineering has played in the development of this crucial centre for Irish sport. The objective of our day was to create a positive awareness of the engineering profession while at the same time affording our visitors the opportunity to avail of a walking tour of some of the most innovative sporting facilities in Europe.
To date, TOBIN Consulting Engineers has played a very central role in the development of this Campus. We have acted as Employers Representative and Technical Advisor to Sport Ireland in the delivery of key infrastructure at this site including the National Horse Sport Arena, the Campus Pavilion Building, the Irish Institute of Sport High-Performance Training Centre and the National Sports Campus Community Playing Pitches. TOBIN Consulting Engineers was also appointed to deliver the centrepiece of the Campus, the National Indoor Arena. It was somewhat fitting that this specific building served as the finale point for our tour on the day, and in no uncertain terms, did not disappoint those in attendance.
Overall, this proved to be an incredibly successful event, due in no small part to our speakers on the day, namely: Director General of Engineers Ireland – Caroline Spillane, Gold and Bronze medal winning cyclist and National University of Ireland, Galway lecturer – Eoghan Clifford and National Sports Campus Director – David Conway. Our very own Brian Downes was also in fine form in highlighting the role that engineering continues to play in Irish sport.
We look forward to hosting many more events in conjunction with Engineers Ireland going forward into this year and beyond.
