Galway City Council as the Authority responsible for the upkeep of Galway City’s public infrastructure undertook a project for the overall regeneration of Galway City.  Galway City Council recognised that Shop Street, required repairs and remediation works as a priority over two phases.  The scheme was required to rejuvenate and upgrade this primary retail and tourism destination, attracting and facilitating both visitors and locals alike for many years into the future.   The works has improved both pedestrian and vehicular movement, enhancing shoppers, visitors, and the business community’s experience of Galway City.

Primarily Shop Street, was identified as requiring priority repairs and remediation.   Vehicle damage associated with goods deliveries had taken their toll on the pavement.   Maintenance works was needed to repair aging underground utilities.  Deterioration in surface water drainage was rectified as well as standardising way-finding signage and enhancing accessibility for people with disabilities.   Interaction with directly affected properties / traders and the general public during the two phases of the work was ongoing and critical to the smooth running of the project.  It was critical that the impact on local businesses, residents and trader traffic movement was minimised.  TOBIN Consulting Engineers provided project management and programming, pre-planning, procurement and administration of third-party surveys, advice, and support to Galway City Council regarding significant stakeholder management throughout the duration of the project.

Irish Water’s sewer rehabilitation works at Cross Street coincided with the Shop Street Enhancement Project and it was critical that these works had to be properly coordinated particularly from a public relations perspective.
