TOBIN Consulting Engineers’ role in the GPO’s 1916 Centenary Commemorations
There are few locations in Ireland, if any, that hold the same level of historical resonance as the infamous GPO. The events at this location in 1916 changed the entire course of history on this island forever. It was from the steps of this battle-hardened building that Ireland was declared a sovereign nation. Today, this building stands as a living monument to the Easter Rising – arguably the biggest event in Irish history.
As part of the 1916 Centenary Commemorations, TOBIN Consulting Engineers was appointed as the Lead Consultant for the GPO’s fit-out works on the new shop, cafe and associated retail space. These specific facilities are based at the centre of this interpretive exhibition venue overlooking the ground’s famous courtyard. Visitors to the venue can experience events from Easter week in a real and interactive sense through the use of innovative touch screens and audio visual booths. There is also an extensive amount of historical material and content for people, of all ages, to work their way through including the original copy of the Proclamation. This project holds a special place among the staff here at TOBIN. It was a genuine honour to have been involved in the extensive preparations at the GPO for the Centenary Commemorations.
