Works consisted of the construction of a new fire station on the outskirts of Monaghan Town Centre. The building is a large industrial type building in excess of 5,000 sq.m and was constructed using a steel frame structure, with a large concrete slab and pre-cast concrete wide slab flooring designed compositely with the steel floor structure for greater efficiency.. The striking sloping façades of the Main Building and the maintenance building offered a particular engineering challenge. This was overcome by using sloped portal frames which provided the required stability. The ground conditions on the site were poor and challenging, lean mix trenches were utilized under the pad and strip foundations to achieve the required bearing pressures. Lime stabilization was utilized on the roads and hard standing areas to achieve the required CBR values.
