TOBIN’s work with the Shannon Airport Authority (SAA).

Shannon Airport, located in County Clare, is one of only three international airports in Ireland. The Shannon region in the west of Ireland is synonymous with FDI investment and expansive multinational activity across a number of key sectors, namely the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. The airport itself is based at the centre of this economic activity and continues to expand in size and operational output having firmly established itself as a steady transatlantic gateway between Ireland and the US. It has also been economically underpinned to date with duty-free shopping and aviation leasing business models. The airport is currently operated by the Shannon Airport Authority (SAA).

TOBIN Consulting Engineers has built up a significant body of experience in the area of airport engineering services through its work at international commercial airports in both Ireland and Poland. In light of this, TOBIN has been retained as engineering advisors to the SAA as they continue to roll out and develop their ambitious expansion plans for the airport. Working closely with a very innovative group, TOBIN has been able to create viable and pragmatic solutions for a number of key areas under the authority’s development in this specialist sector.

To date, TOBIN has been retained by the SAA to complete preliminary design, detailed design, tender process and construction administration consultancy services for a number of key projects in Shannon. Quite notably, TOBIN assumed the role of Project Supervisor for the Design Process for the redevelopment works on the EAH Hangar at the airport and were also central to the works to the Old Terminal Building and associated accommodation to bring them into full compliance with all relevant building regulations.

In assisting the SAA with some of their longer-term objectives, TOBIN has been involved in some very important feasibility studies for the conversion of the A330 Hangar from its existing use to a painting hangar. TOBIN has also carried out research and investigations on the use of other assets within the airport’s grounds. More recently, TOBIN has successfully completed the extension of the Runway and Turnpad 06. This project was challenging due to the works being carried out in a live airport environment. TOBIN has worked closely with the project team, client, and the main contractor to deliver the authority’s key requirements within budget and on programme whilst minimizing disruptions to operations of the airport.

TOBIN looks forward to a continued and successful relationship with the SAA. Working with a progressive and innovative group like the SAA has meant a large degree of success has been achieved to date, and prospects for the future look very positive.
