TOBIN Consulting Engineers: Client Representative/Technical Advisor for Phase II of the NIA.

The Minister for Transport, Tourism, and Sport, Shane Ross TD, on the 11th of July 2017 announced the commencement of the development of Phase II of the Sport Ireland – National Indoor Arena. This second phase would provide permanent indoor facilities for Ireland’s three leading field sports, namely Gaelic Games, Soccer, and Rugby. In order to meet with the specific and individual requirements of these sporting disciplines, Phase II will include the construction of an indoor pitch for Gaelic Games and Soccer (that could also accommodate a number of other sports) and a half-sized indoor Rugby pitch. Phase II would also provide the ancillary facilities required for this new development including changing and player rooms, offices, and meeting rooms. The cost of construction for Phase II w be approximately €24m.

Speaking at the announcement, Minister Ross said, ‘since Phase I opened earlier this year (2017), the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena has had an extremely positive impact on sport in Ireland with a number of events of National and International significance having already taken place. Ireland has a strong international track record in rugby and soccer, while the GAA continues to provide opportunities to so many around the country. The addition of these indoor facilities to our sporting infrastructure will greatly benefit all three sports from grassroots right up to high-performance levels. I look forward to the commencement of work in the coming weeks’. Also speaking at the announcement of Phase II was the Chairman of Sport Ireland, Kieran Mulvey. Mr. Mulvey said that ‘the development of Phase II means that Ireland’s three leading field sports will have access to extensive indoor and outdoor facilities along with the world-class facilities of the Sport Ireland Institute in one location’.
